Location and surroundings
The single-family house is located in the Maciejów district of Zabrze. The neighboring plots, as well as the plot on which the house stands, had been used as an orchard for several decades. The remnants of the orchard are still visible on adjacent properties and continue to be used in this way by their owners. One of the key conceptual premises was to maximize the visual connection with the surroundings, particularly to the south and west, where the orchard has largely remained in its original state.
Client expectations
The client's primary functional requirement was to distribute the house's program across three levels. The basement was intended to include the client's studio (office), a garage, and a storage cellar. The ground floor was designated as the living area. The upper floor was planned to house the night time zone, featuring three bedrooms, aspacious bathroom, and a laundry room. Additionally, the client requested maximum visual separation from the street.
The zoning plan permitted the construction of a two-story building.
Design decisions
The house was designed with functional solutions spread across three levels, as desired by the client, but formally within two stories to comply with zoning requirements. As a result, the building features a distinctive form and roof shape. The roofrises in a continuous ribbon-like curve, culminating at ground level as a green roof, blending with the surrounding terrain. The daily living area, combined with the spiraling roof, creates a secluded and intimate garden terrace. A second garden terrace was designed beyond the building’s outline. Panoramic, wide windows on the ground floor provide an expansive view of the entire plot and the remnants of the orchard on neighboring properties. In fulfilling the client’s expectations, the house is oriented toward and opens upto the garden. Only the studio (office) has a modest visual connection to the street.
