The Regatta Canal and its surroundings

Park Śląski, Chorzów

The conceptual design for the redevelopment of the central area of Silesian Park provides for the preservation of the original functional and spatial guidelines and general design solutions proposed by the park's designer, Professor Władysław Niemirski. The concept provides for the spatial reorganization of the central part of the park located along and around the areas adjacent to the regatta channel. We have proposed a correction of the channel's shoreline, and the island located on it, focusing on ensuring the widest possible access to the quays and water for users. The longitudinal axis of the canal was to be the conventional functional boundary between the different uses of the areas around the canal. Due to their topographical characteristics and vegetation, the areas along the northern shoreline are to take the form of a naturalistic space with a free, open composition for passive recreation among the vegetation. This area slopes gently towards the canal, and we have designed free access to the canal water via a grassy waterfront. We have proposed the southern bank of the canal as an organized waterfront promenade with an architectural topography in the form of terraces and steps down to the water level. Along the canal, we have located year-round service pavilions. The buildings are connected by a system of pergolas and canopies, allowing the boulevards along the canal to be used as covered dining gardens. On the other side of the dining pavilions, between the recreational clearing and the pavilions, we designed themed gardens. The gardens serve as a buffer zone between the canal with the pavilions and the recreational clearing and complement the functions of the adjacent areas. The area between the Kapelusz Hall and the regatta canal was also to be rebuilt. We designed a square there, which serves as a representative forecourt to the entrance hall, opening onto the canal and connected to the water in the form of terraced boulevards. We also proposed changes to the island on the canal. We changed its shape and the form of the bridge and designed a café building on the water and trees.
