The garden within this “threshold zone” of the 21st century should be multifunctional and rich in content - drawing inspiration and purpose from its surroundings: the diversity of nature, the many facets of urban life as a living organism and human ecosystem, and the richness of human creativity. It is a space of multifunctionality created by humans from greenery and architecture - a proper symbiosis between nature and human-made matter, shaped by and for people.
The 21st-Century Garden Pavilion, situated at the intersection of green space and city scape, serves as an organizing and structuring element for the garden’s functions. It forms the spine of the functional and compositional layout. Defined as a perforated, semi-transparent shell, its material form creates a delicate boundary between the city and the garden. It acts as a new type of enclosure - delineating and containing space while still allowing for user permeability in many areas -encouraging transit. The pavilion defines zones without creating a visual or formal barrier.
